Trumbo

Trumbo

Went to the first night of Trumbo at the Jermyn Street Theatre last night – driving down to London from Weston-super-Mare and back again afterwards. Well worth it. Corin Redgrave was excellent, very engaging indeed and Nick Waring provided solid support – not easy in the guise of Narrator/Son as there is little “character” to play with.

The “Committee on Un-American Activities” was a very black time in the US and it is fascinating to see it through the eyes of one of the original 10 to stand up to it who refused to answer and were imprisoned for contempt. Dalton Trumbo was a great writer, both for the screen and in his personal letters as we discover through this play put together by his son Christopher. By tradition the play is presented “from the book” and the part of Trumbo himself has been undertaken by a stream of prominent “guest” performersd over the years including Paul Newman, Gore Vidal, Richard Dreyfudd, Alec Baldwin, Eddie Izzard, Roy Schneider and others.
