Sweeney Todd to arrive in London’s West End in March

Sweeney Todd at the AdelphiThe Chichester Festival Theatre production of Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will be coming to the Adelphi Theatre in London and will open on 20 March 2012. The production will be taking bookings until 22 September 2012.

The show will star British stage and screen veterans Michael Ball as the sinister Sweeney Todd and Imelda Staunton as pie-shop owner, Mrs Lovett.

With music & lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and based on the book by Hugh Wheeler (adapted for the stage by Christopher Bond) the show follows the story of a man (Benjamin Barker – alias Sweeney Todd) driven insane by his transportation for a crime he didn’t commit and his subsequent quest to avenge the wrongs suffered by him and his family.

In 2007, Tim Burton directed a big screen adaptation of the show which starred Johnny Depp in the lead role and Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs Lovett. The film received wide critical acclaim and various award nominations, including a win at the Golden globes.

The West End production is directed by Jonathan Kent, designed by Anthony Ward, produced by Playful Productions, Robert G. Bartner, Old Vic Productions and Matthew Mitchell, lighting by Mark Henderson, musical direction by Nicholas Skilbeck, with orchestration by Jonathan Tunick.
